Benefits of Peppermint Oil for Your Skin

Whenever someone mentioned Peppermint Oil I immediately thought of the Brachs Peppermint candies that all the church ladies kept in their purses when I was little.  Once I started making handmade skin care products I realized that there is definitely more to this ingredient than being in the candy of choice for little church ladies. Way more. In fact, once I realized all the amazing benefits of this essential oil, candy is the last thing on my mind. So lets dive right in and take about a few of the amazing benefits.

Before we go any further, here’s a few fun facts about peppermint for the nerds out there:

  • The Ancient Greeks believed mint could cure hiccups and gets its name from Greek Mythology. Learn more about that here.
  • The Ancient Romans believed eating mint would increase a persons intelligence.
  • Peppermint is known as the sweet mint, and is THE one you’ll find in candy, gum, teas, jellies, syrups, ice cream and other confections as well as soap, shampoo, cigarettes and toothpaste.
  • Those red and white candy canes that we all know and love contain no peppermint. Sorry but they contain peppermint flavoring.

Now that we have had a little fun, let’s get down to business shall we? The benefits of this awesome essential oil are so vast that I cannot cover them all in this post so I will highlight just a few that I think are the most amazing for skincare purporses.

  1. CLEARS UP ACNE-Peppermint is excellent for acne prone skin, the reason being that Peppermint is an antimicrobial agent which aids in clearing up acne naturally by ridding the skin free of any allergens or pimple-causing bacteria.
  2. HEALS SUNBURN-Had too much fun in the sun? Forgot your sunblock? Lost your wide brimmed hat? Ouch! While sunburn certainly is painful, Peppermint oil can be used to heal your skin and help you get on with your life. Just mix a few drops of Peppermint Oil with some coconut oil and you have a soothing and healing salve.
  3. CONTROLS OIL-Peppermint oil is a go to for oily skin types because it is helpful in balancing natural oils thereby eliminating clogged pores and improving skin texture.
  4. ANTI ITCH-Peppermint Oil is found in many potions and ointments designed to stop or reduce itching from bug bites or other irritations. This is because of the natural anti itch properties of Peppermint Oil.

These are just a few of the HUGE list of overall benefits of this amazing oil. I hope you will do further research on your own and uncover more ways in which Peppermint can help you or someone you love. Be sure to check our store for  our Pine Tar & Peppermint Oil Handcrafted Soap.
